Homer's Odyssey

Iliad and Odyssey are the Greek's core books.

Structure

Major scene change every 4 books:

1-4: Telemachus searches for his father, Odysseus

• Hero cycles for Telemachus and Odysseus

5-8: Odysseus journey home from Calypso

• compare Greek wisdom (doubt everything) with Hebrew wisdom (trust God)

9-12: Odysseus tells his adventures from Troy to Calypso

• mistakes and consequences

13-16: Odysseus and Telemachus return to Ithica, meet at Eumaeus's home

• loyalty of Eumaeus

17-20: Odysseus goes to palace in disguise, observes the situation, and plans

• who recognizes him, who does not.  deterioration of morals during absence.

21-24: Odysseus reveals himself, kills suitors, puts down rebellion, makes peace

• restoring peace and justice.  "Blessing the people and by the people blessed"
