Augustus Caesar

Attached is a copy of Deeds of the Divine Augustus (by himself), with typos fixed.  This is a good size for a document study, and is a primary, as well as original source document.

Plutarch has no life of Augustus extant, although his Life of Antony has valuable information on Augustus.

Some alternatives biographies are:

Suetonius, The Divine Augustus

Nicolaus of Damascus, Life of Augustus

Nicolaus describes his early life, but then does an extensive digression into the assassination of Julius Caesar, and ends around 44 B.C.  There was probably more, but it is lost.

Appian, The Civil Wars, books 3-5

Cassius Dio, Roman History, books 45-56

Modern Accounts

Augustus, from De Imperatoribus Romanis

(From an online encyclopedia of roman emporers.)  This is a good overview of the events, accomplishments, and impact of Augustus' life.  It gets rather bogged down talking about the problem of succession, but other than that, it is recommended.  Extensive footnotes and sources are listed, so it can serve as a starting point for more research.
